Makeup and fashion trends may come and go but there’s always one constant, the need for a handbag. From daily use to collecting, the world of handbags is vast and rich, so I’ve compiled a list of iconic handbags you need to check out.
Gucci Jackie Bag
Truly a bag with history, in the ‘60s Gucci renamed their popular Constance bag to the Gucci Jackie after the First Lady was photographed with the tote. The popularity of the Kennedy’s made it sell well with customers that wanted to copy the style icon. It takes 13 hours to make each bag, which consists of a piston strap and an Italian cotton lining. Simple yet timeless! As with most iconic handbags, the style is now available in a variety of colours, so you can find one that suits.
Hermes Birkin Bag
Named after famous singer Jane Birkin, the Hermes Birkin bag is a favourite arm companion for celebrities worldwide; Victoria Beckham, for instance, has over 100 of them. It’s available in a variety of colours and leathers, including lamb and alligator. This single clasp, double loop bag is at the forefront of fashion and renowned for retaining its value.
Chanel 2.55
Launched in February 1955, from which its name is derived, the Chanel 2.55 completely changed the style of evening bags. This was managed by adding a chain strap to the bag, making it hands-free which, at the time, was an innovation, as high-society women clutched bags with one hand. The bag’s quilted design was inspired by jockeys’ padded jackets. The now iconic ‘CC’ clasp was added in 1983 when Karl Lagerfeld took over as creative director for the legendary label.
Louis Vuitton Speedy
Launched in 1932, the Speedy was crucial for Vuitton as it marked his crossover from luxury luggage to fashion. Vuitton was asked to create a small bag for short trips and so this exquisite, monogrammed, double loop zip tote was born. The first of Vuitton’s iconic handbags became so popular that Audrey Hepburn asked for smaller versions to be created.
Luella Gisele Bag
Launched during the 2002 ‘It Bag Hysteria’, the Gisele followed the trend set by Hermes and Gucci of naming handbags after influential women with style. This bag features an equestrian style and comes with an adorable heart charm. After it was seen on the arms of celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Sienna Miller, and Kiera Knightley, it became a hit.
These iconic handbags are classics; they stand the test of time and their stylish appeal goes hand-in-hand with modern practicality. If you want to build a collection of iconic handbags, I recommend any of the five from my list to start.
