Blackheads are immensely pesky but, unfortunately, affect us all. However, there are a few ways you can reduce the likelihood of blackheads occurring and, better still, remove blackheads altogether. In this article, I look at my top tips for their removal which, if tried, should result in gleaming, clear skin.
What are Blackheads?
Before you tackle the problem, it’s good to find out exactly what blackheads are and why they occur. Blackheads are a build-up of dead skin cells and bacteria that plug your pores. The blockage means your pores can’t purge oil and dead skin cells from the skin, which means the plug is then pushed closer to the surface of your skin where it oxidises and turns black – hence the name and appearance.
How to Combat Blackheads
There are several ways you can combat and, eventually, remove blackheads – see below.
Choose the Right Facial Cleanser
Per any beauty routine, it’s essential you cleanse your face regularly and use the right products to do so. Many people make the mistake of choosing products containing benzoyl peroxide to battle blackheads, but such products can irritate the skin – especially if yours is sensitive, which includes dry skin. Instead, find a product specifically formulated for blackheads that contains salicylic acid, which is much less harsh. As with any cleanser, results take time, but it will help to keep your skin clear.
Ever Considered Pore Strips?
No, pore strips are not just a way for beauty experts such as myself to make you look silly, although they do absolutely do that – cue the girls-night-in Instagram snap. Pore strips do, in fact, effectively remove blackheads, however, I recommend using your facial cleanser a few nights in a row beforehand to loosen up the plugs and increase the strips’ effects. Generally, the forehead, nose, and upper chin are the best places to target blackheads, although tailor placement to your problem areas.
Reduce the Oil in Your Skin
One of the best ways to combat blackheads, and all facial blemishes, in fact, is to minimise the amount of natural oil in your skin. To do this, you can use an oil-absorbing clay mask for 10-15 minutes one evening a week. When you reduce the oil in your skin, you reduce the likelihood of blackheads.
Of course, if you try all the above and still do not see results, consider contacting a qualified dermatologist to get professional advice and see what other opportunities are open to you. However, generally, I find that the above techniques work a treat and I’m sure you will, too. Fingers crossed!
