Finding a look that works for you and is unique can be incredibly difficult. There are so many outfits that just clash then when you add on top the difficulty of finding makeup that’s both inexpensive and compliments your attire, you quickly find yourself spiralling into a fashion nightmare.
Perhaps that’s why the classic 1980s look of matching makeup to clothes is making a comeback.
It’s a simple, low-cost and timesaving approach to your outfit that will make you look your best with a lot less stress. When it’s done well, the match-match look can be bold, beautiful and make quite the statement. But how exactly do you match your makeup to your clothes and what works?
As a professional makeup artist, I have a handful of useful tips to get you started.
Don’t Overcomplicate Your Look
It may sound obvious but keep it simple. Don’t try to pair cherry-red dresses with any red lipstick and blush as that will just make you look like a clown. Instead, pick a single, small feature and focus on enhancing that; that’s one of my most important makeup tips. Also, stick with easy to remove makeup so you don’t need to spend hours taking those layers off with great difficulty.
Day-to-Day Ideas
For regular day-to-day makeup that matches your outfit, you should choose simple shades and nothing too garish. Try correctors according to your undertone and concealers in either yellow or pink undertone to conceal your makeup. I love the Bobbi Brown concealer and foundation range palettes for this, not too heavy coverage (although that might be better for the evening) or can be mixed with a moisturiser for a lighter coverage in the day, all blendable and worth considering as it’s great when you want to even out that colour tone and avoid that awkward ‘doll’ look.
Suggestions for Evenings
When choosing your evening makeup, go for some bold and sexy colours to add pizzazz and help you look elegant and chic. I recommend the Mac range of lipstick. Pair it with a little black dress, which every London makeup artist will tell you is a sure-fire way to look fab. Try kicking it up a notch with an evening gown if you want to look extra fancy but ensure the colour compliments your skin tone.
Looking Great in the Workplace
One of my last beauty tips is for the workplace. Stick to basic colours as they compliment business suits and blazers; you want something that makes you look professional so stay away from the smoky eye or bright colours. If you really need eyeshadow in your outfit, choose a shade that’s neutral like beige or brown rather than something that stands out too much. Also, to avoid having to nip out the office to top up your look, try Gerard Cosmetics’ Slay All Day spray to lock in your look.
Stick to these tips when picking your outfit and you’ll look more glamorous than grandma-ish.
