We have all been there; you’re starting a new job in an office and you have no idea what the dress code is or what office attire you can get away with wearing around your new colleagues. With my handy workwear style guide, I’ll walk you through some of the basic office attire for that future job that will let you nail that professional business look.
Suits
It may seem obvious, but your first option for office attire should always be a suit of some sort. It doesn’t have to be a ’70s-inspired shirt-and-tie power combo; a blazer and blouse work just as well to present a smart-casual, professional look while helping you work within a budget. Ideally, with your blazer, you want clean lines and classic colours in neutral hues. If you can pair your blazer with tops that are ‘in’ this season, you’ll look extra fabulous at that next meeting.
I also recommend going for natural fibres like cotton and wool as these last longer than synthetic materials. Also, check the stitching – you don’t want your suit falling apart after just a handful of washes! Spend a little more for quality.
Tops
Tops can be a potential fashion disaster for work outfits. Stay away from loud prints and garish colours – stick to simple prints and soft colours. Silk blouses are a good starting point as their versatility allows them to be worn for any occasion, from conferences with the CEO to casual catch-ups with colleagues; they’re an excellent all-rounder for day to night.
Shoes
When it comes to shoes, you can’t go wrong with a pair of versatile black leather slingback heels. I recommend pairing them with a knee-length pinstripe skirt or a black pantsuit if you want a more professional look around the office.
Accessories
To round off my guide to work clothes for women, there are accessories. You may have your makeup created by the best makeup artist in London, but you’re not going to be taken seriously at all if your styling isn’t on top form.
If you want to look your best around the office, a simple yet tasteful scarf is incredibly effective. Choose lightweight materials and bright colours, and tie it in an infinity knot or an ascot for a simple yet trendy ensemble.
For jewellery, scale it back and avoid wearing large pieces or costume jewellery. Keep earrings small and conservative and any necklaces should be well away from your cleavage; go for classy and conservative instead of bold and brash.
Stick to these tips and you won’t have any problem finding an outfit that will make you look fantastic around the office.
