How to Remove Makeup

Sleeping with your makeup on can lead to acne, dry skin, and even premature wrinkles – and that’s just your foundation! Leftover mascara can cause eye infections, irritation, and a series of other issues, too. It’s essential to remove your makeup before bed to maintain healthy skin. However, spending hours scrubbing at your face can seem less than appealing, especially when you’d rather be snuggled up in bed.

Below, I explore how to remove makeup properly. Better still, each of my methods is quick, gentle, and easy.

How to Remove Eye Makeup

Before beginning your evening cleansing routine, it’s essential you remove stubborn eye makeup. Sleeping with mascara on not only rubs onto your pillow but can also cause puffy eyes in the morning – a look that we all want to avoid! While some people may choose to use their everyday cleanser, a gentle eye makeup remover is usually the best way to remove mascara.

For those that wear waterproof mascara, investing in a good-quality remover is essential. Typically, oil-based formulas are the most effective; however, it’s important to make sure the product isn’t so oily that it leaves a residue. Oil-based formulas work by breaking down the pigment in makeup, which means your eye makeup can be wiped away effortlessly, without any uncomfortable scrubbing.

To remove your makeup, apply your remover to a natural cotton pad. Once you’ve saturated the pad, press it onto your eye and hold for a couple of seconds. By this point, the remover should have worked its magic and started to dissolve the pigment. Use a different pad to wipe your eyes gently until all the product is gone.

How to Remove Lip Makeup

A lipstick that can last for hours before needing to be reapplied is appealing. However, what are you supposed to do if you want to switch colours or products throughout the day? Removing good-quality lipsticks can be a tricky business, especially while on the go. Personally, I find that a tin of Vaseline works wonders. Not only is the product gentle on the skin, but it’s kind to your bank balance, too.

To remove lipstick, apply a thin layer of Vaseline and wait for it to soak in. After around five minutes, use a soft cotton pad to wipe your lips clean. Alternatively, you can use an oil-based lip balm. The oil will begin to break down the pigment in the lipstick, allowing you to remove unwanted makeup with ease.

How to Remove Foundation

Before settling into bed, it’s essential to remove your foundation. Failing to do so will not only clog up your pores, but it can also cause makeup to transfer onto your clean pillowcase, and if you don’t change pillowcases, the bacteria spreads onto the face the next time you’re in bed. Thankfully, removing foundation is a simple process. Your daily cleanser, preferably one that is oil-based, should be sufficient, even for removing full-coverage products.

To remove foundation, gently massage your cleanser onto your face. Leave the product to sit for a few minutes, allowing it to break down your foundation. Use a wet, warm washcloth to wipe your face clean. If you can still see foundation on your skin, apply a little more cleanser and repeat the process.

Follow my tips, and you’ll never need to ask how to remove makeup again. It’s easy! For the best results, I recommend using natural cotton pads to remove products from the eyes and lips. Cotton pads are less abrasive than tissue paper, baby wipes or your fingers, preventing your delicate skin from becoming red and irritated.
